Better Coaching, as an organization, was born from the deeply personal journey of two individuals. At its core is the story of Andrew Koly, whose battle with addiction spanned fifteen years, culminating in the loss of his right arm due to needle use. Facing the repercussions of his actions, Andrew found himself in a cycle of arrest, with the looming prospect of significant incarceration in Colorado.

However, April 20, 2020, marked a pivotal moment in Andrew’s life. He began forging connections and discovered a supportive community in Denver, Colorado, notably through Monarch Sober Living. This network provided him with invaluable support, breaking the cycle of dependency on strained relationships and geographical barriers.

Engaging in social activities and finding joy in life became anchors in Andrew’s journey to recovery. Despite facing pressure from medical professionals and societal expectations to pursue conventional paths of treatment, Andrew found strength in the network of believers and supporters around him.

Rather than succumbing to the narrative of disability and dependency, Andrew found purpose in his journey by becoming a liaison at the Beginnings Recovery Center and later contributing his expertise to the Federal Office for Mile High Behavioral Healthcare. Eventually, he returned to Monarch, where he became a vital part of their Competency Restoration Program as a certified peer and family specialist.

At Better Coaching, we embrace the ethos of peer support in its purest form. We understand that true recovery stems from empowering individuals to navigate their own paths, supported by a network of peers who have walked similar journeys. Our belief in the transformative power of peer work drives our mission to provide avenues for individuals to reclaim their lives through their own efforts.

In our inaugural year, Better Coaching has focused on laying the foundation for our vision: providing an online meeting platform via Zoom for connection-oriented peer groups and local meetups. Andrew, our Colorado peer and family specialist, has already made a significant impact, transforming lives of Denver Residents and receiving feedback from participants like “Why hasn’t anyone said this to me in the past?”

Unlike mandated programs, our approach emphasizes enjoyment and engagement. However, attracting participants without a captured audience can be challenging. This grant is crucial to our ability to launch our program effectively.
We are confident in the effectiveness of our model, which prioritizes connection and empowerment. As our community grows, so will the evidence of our impact. With minimal funding, we aim to initiate our program and expand services as demand increases, ensuring greater support for Denver residents.
